Are SIP panels a sustainable material?
Structural Insulated Panels are a fantastic building material, which are made in a sustainable way.
The outer layers of SIPs are made from Oriented Strand Board (OSB), which comes from young, fast-growing trees in responsibly managed forests. Wood is of course a renewable resource and OSB takes far less energy to produce than concrete or steel.
The OSB in SIPs uses small wood chips and efficient machinery to fabricate, making it a smart use of resources. Around 85-90% of a tree can be used to make high-quality SIP panels, and the rest can be turned into energy, pulp chips, or other useful products.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is the core insulation used in SIPs and is mostly air. It’s super lightweight and only 2% plastic. The energy saved over time by using EPS insulation far outweighs the energy used to make it. It also takes 24% less energy to create EPS insulation compared to fibreglass insulation with the same insulating properties. Added to that, any scrap EPS produced during the manufacturing stage can be recycled and turned into other EPS products. So, even the small leftovers don’t end up in landfills.
As well as being made from sustainable materials, SIPs are excellent insulators with a very low U-Value. This reduces the need for heating which not only saves money but also reduces CO2 emissions.
In a nutshell, SIPs are environmentally friendly and a very efficient choice for building, making construction greener and buildings more comfortable.
